AI answers are quoting local businesses. Here is how to be one of them

Write pages that answer one question plainly, near the top, in a passage that makes sense on its own. Keep your business details identical everywhere they appear. That is most of what you can actually influence, and it is the same work that made a page useful to a person before any of this started.

The uncomfortable part is that nobody outside those companies knows the mechanics, and anybody selling you a guaranteed method for appearing in AI answers is selling you a guess with a price on it. What is observable is which pages get quoted, and they tend to have things in common.

What do the quoted pages have in common?

They answer the question in the first few lines rather than after four paragraphs of preamble. The answer sits in a passage that survives being lifted out of the page, because that is what happens to it. And the page belongs to something identifiable: a business with a name, an address, a phone number and a history that agrees with itself across the web.

Specificity helps more than length. A page that says a hall bathroom in an older Stroudsburg house typically runs a certain range, and explains what pushes it, is quotable. A page that says costs vary depending on your needs is not, and never will be.

What does self contained actually mean?

Each section should read correctly if somebody pastes it into a message with no context. That means no "as we mentioned above", no pronouns pointing back three paragraphs, and a heading that states the question a person would actually ask.

Practically, this changes how you write headings. "Permitting Considerations" is a category label. "Do I need a permit for this?" is the question, and it is what somebody types or says. The second one gets matched.

Are your pages quotable?

Send us your three most important pages. We will tell you which passages could be lifted out and used as an answer, and which ones say nothing specific.

Does structured data help?

It helps machines understand what a page is, and it costs almost nothing to add, so we add it. What it does not do is manufacture authority. Marking up a thin page tells a system precisely what kind of thin page it is.

Worth knowing: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results for most sites in August 2023. Plenty of agencies still sell FAQ markup as a rankings feature. We still use it, because the structure is useful and answer engines read it, and we are honest that the blue star it used to earn in the results is gone.

What about consistency of business details?

This is the boring one that does real work. Your name, address and phone number should be byte for byte identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, your Facebook page, and every directory you are listed in. Suite numbers written two ways, an old phone number on a listing from 2019, a business name with a service tacked on. Each one is a small reason to doubt.

Machines are assembling a picture of your business from many sources. Contradictions between sources make the picture less certain, and less certain businesses get quoted less. That is not a theory about a specific model, it is just how any system that has to pick one answer behaves.

What should a local business actually do this quarter?

Pick the ten questions you get asked most on the phone. Write a page or a section for each one that answers it in the first forty to sixty words and then goes deeper. Put the real numbers in where you have them. Fix your business details everywhere they appear.

That is not an AI strategy. It is the same content work we would have recommended five years ago, which is exactly the point: the businesses doing well in AI answers are largely the ones that were already publishing useful, specific, attributable pages. The technology changed. The work did not.

Does any of this change what I publish?

A little. The shape changes more than the substance. We write more of our client pages as a sequence of real questions now, each with its answer immediately underneath, because that is both better for a person skimming on a phone and easier for a machine to lift. The old habit of building to a conclusion at the bottom of the page works against you in both cases.

The other change is that we put the specifics higher. A cost range used to sit two thirds of the way down a page after the context; now it goes near the top with the context underneath it. Nobody has ever complained about getting the number sooner.

What I would not spend money on

Tools that promise to track your visibility inside AI answers. The data is thin, the sampling is unstable, and we have watched the same query return three different answer sets in a week. Watch your own contacts instead. Somebody who arrives having already read your cost range and calls to book is the signal, whatever route they took.

I would also not rewrite your whole site for this. Take the pages that already earn attention and make their answers cleaner. That is a week of work, not a project.

If you want us to look at which of your pages are quotable and which are not, it is part of what we do in the content and search work, and it sits inside the Growth Engine for clients on a plan. Pricing for both is on the pricing page.
